Mbujimayi will celebrate the 38th anniversary of
“The Fight Of The Century”, Muhammad Ali vs.
George Foreman, when ten million US Dollars was
necessary for promoter Don King to organize that
event in 1974.
Back then, the choice of Kinshasa to host Ali vs.
Foreman was due to the fact that D.R.C. President
Mobutu agreed to put up the required funds. At the
time, the purses paid to the boxers were the
biggest in the sports history, as no boxer had
ever received five million dollars for a single
service.
The fight remained the biggest sporting event
organized on the African continent until the world
cup of football took place in South Africa in
2010. To this day it is still the best marketing
of D.R.C., and remembering and celebrating the
event makes a lot of sense.
The main man of the hour on October 30 in
Mbujimayi will be local hero Kabuya Aggrry who
will say goodbye to boxing, and one of their sons,
the son of Kabuya Aggry's boxer Kabangu Sartana,
named Erick Buloba who will fight for the UBO
All-Africa Super Lightweight title as challenger
against a Ghanaian opponent at the Stade Tshikisha.
