Former Universal Boxing Organization™ Latino Light Heavyweight Champion Brinatty Maquilon from Columbia was tragically killed in a work accident in late November in Quito, Ecuador. He was only 43 years old.

Maquilon was working as a painter when he accidentally touched a high voltage cable hanging too close to the roof of the house being painted, killing him instantly.

To add to the tragedy, Maquilon was waiting for his US Visa to go through so he could reunite with his only surviving son, Steven, whom he had just managed to locate in the United States after separation of over ten years caused by immigration issues.

After making his professional debut in 1988, Maquilon fought prominent names such as Gerald McClellan, John David Jackson, Jorge Castro, Buster Drayton and many other world class boxers.

His biggest victory was over Drayton, a former IBF World Champion, whom Maquilon stopped in eight rounds at the legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia in 1988.

Maquilon was a proud and genuine fighter who never gave up on his dream of being a champion. In December 2010 he travelled to Brazil and won the UBO Latino title by stopping local hero Fabio Garido (22-1 at the time), and the UBO is proud to have been associated with this fine sportsman and human being.

His kindness and humble heart won him appreciation of a great number of people in Quito, Ecuador where he resided for over fifteen years. He will always be remembered, and his legacy as a fighter will live forever in those who knew him closely.

Rest in peace CHAMP!
