Championship bouts have been few
and far between in the
Democratic Republic of The Congo
since Muhammad Ali and George
Foreman had their legendary
“Rumble In The Jungle” in 1974.
Back then it was still called
Zaire, and only a handful of
title fights has taken place in
the African country in the past
36 years. But on March 20 the
Universal Boxing Organization
will crown two champions at the
Stadium Kabila in Lubumbashi, on a
show promoted by one of the
countries boxing heroes, Mukadi
Manda.
Manda, a former TWBA titlist, is
now the leading promoter of the
D.R.C, since hanging up his own
gloves in 2008. In Matadi two of
his promising protégés will face
opponents from Mali for UBO
International crowns, and it
shapes up to be a couple of very
interesting encounters.

Undefeated super welterweight
Mungulu Okanime, 6-0-2 (4),
takes on the tough Kulibali Ali,
16-6 (5), and Welterweight
Ilunga Dominique,
7-0-1 (1), appears to be
getting his hands full against Kabongo Beetens, 15-2 (6).
President of the D.R.C. Boxing
Commission, Mr. Claude Kaninda,
was recently appointed UBO West
& Central Africa representative,
and will supervise the fights.
He hopes that in the future he
will be able to award world
championship belts to Congolese
boxers, and Okanime and
Dominique
will attempt to take the first
step in that direction on
February 27th.
