Home-town hero Marcial Carrion secured the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ (UBO) Continental (South America) Welterweight title on Saturday night, November 1, in Iquique, Chile.

Carrion took on tough-as-nails Argentinian Santiago Javier Bazan, and had to work hard to emerge victorious in front of an enthusiastic crowd outdoors at the Arena Cavancha.

After nine entertaining rounds it looked as if the closely-contested fight would go to the scorecards, until Carrion hurt Bazan in the tenth and final stanza.

The Chilean followed up and poured on the punches until referee Daniel Cisternas jumped in and waved it off, saving Bazan from a potential violent knockout. Official time of stoppage: 1:50 of round ten.

Carrion (32), now 21-1 (6), joined his twin-brother as UBO Continental champion, as Patricio Carrion won the title at Super Lightweight last August at the exact same venue.

26-year-old Bazan, taking part in his first championship fight coming off seven straight victories, travels home at 8-2 (5).

The fight headlined a show promoted by TC2 Boxing.
