UBO - Universal Boxing Organization™ A clash for the vacant Universal Boxing Organization™ Inter-Continental Heavyweight title is set for Algiers, Algeria on April 1. Local star, and former WBO and IBF Inter-Continental Champion at Cruiserweight, Mohamed Benguesmia (38-3-1, 32 KOs) will square off with former French Champion Merick Roberge (20-8, 8 KOs) on a show promoted by Team Mohammed Guenif in cooperation with Sakete Ali.

Benguesmia turned professional in 1997 in Tallahassee, Florida, and fought twelve of his first fifteen professional bouts in the USA before returning to Algeria in 1999 after a loss to future Hall-Of-Famer Antonio Tarver in Las Vegas.

After two victories at home, Benguesmia travelled to Italy to challenge WBC International titlist Yawe Davis, but lost on points.

In 2001 he had more success as he knocked out Jesper Kristiansen in Denmark to capture the WBO Inter-Continental crown in impressive fashion.

In 2006 he won the IBF Inter-Continental title by beating Frenchman Aime Bafounta, a title he since defended once before vacating.

Merick Roberge vs. Mohamed Benguesmia!

Roberge started his paid career in the ring with a loss in 2000, but quickly found his form and won thirteen of his next fifteen bouts before challenging Vadim Tokarev for the IBF I-C title in Russia in 2003. He lost that fight, but rebounded quickly to win the French title six weeks later with a decision over Frederic Serrat.

In 2007 Roberge went to Hungary to fight Gyorgy Hidvegi for the WBF World title, but as in the bout with Tokarev, Roberge was stopped in the second round on a bad night. In 2008 he regained the French title by stopping the undefeated Christophe Dettinger, but his reign was short and he lost it again later that year to Rashid El Hadak.

Now he is ready to try his luck in a new weight class, and will be highly motivated to defeat Benguesmia in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Algiers to become UBO Champion.
